Install the Lumicast player on Philips Signage displays

Step-by-step guide for installing the Lumicast Player on Philips Signage displays

Philips manufactures a line of displays specifically aimed at digital signage.

These displays are powered by Android under the hood, so our Android app works well on these devices.

The easy installation

Download the provisioning ZIP file

Download the ZIP from here.

Format USB and unpack the ZIP

Take a USB stick with at least 1GB space that is okay to be cleared of its data.

  1. Format the USB to FAT32 (MS-DOS (FAT) on Mac)
    1. On Mac, go to Disk Utility, then select your USB drive and click “Erase”. Then select MS-DOS FAT and press erase.
    2. On Windows:
      1. Open File Explorer: Click the folder icon on your taskbar, or press Windows key + E.
      2. Locate USB Drive: In the left sidebar, click "This PC." Find your USB drive in the right pane (e.g., "USB Drive (D:)").
      3. Right-Click & Format: Right-click on your USB drive and select "Format..."
      4. Configure Options:
        1. File system: Choose "FAT32" from the dropdown menu.
        2. Volume label: (Optional) Give it a name like "PHILIPS_USB".
        3. Quick Format: Ensure this box is checked (it's faster).
      5. Start Formatting: Click "Start" and then "OK" on the warning message.
      6. Complete: Wait for the "Format Complete" message. Click "OK."
  1. Unzip the ZIP file onto the formatted USB drive

Factory reset the Philips TV

Insert the USB into the service USB port of the TV. Then go to the system tools. To get there, press HOME + 1888 then go to Settings > System Tools > Factory Reset.

Setup from USB

After factory resetting, you will be walked through a few options:

  1. Choose your language
  1. Clone media files from USB storage ⇒ Skip
  1. Import Signage Display Settings from USB ⇒ Next

After this, finish and your device will be rebooted. After it boots the first time, the Wave app will open. Skip this setup. Now your device is set up to autostart Lumicast when it is turned on.

ℹ️

The admin password is 0406 by default (you have to enter this when going to HOME + 1888 , which is the admin menu)

Update the app

If there is an update from the Lumicast app, you will see it when you are in the menu (OK on the remote inside the Lumicast app). Update the app if there is an update available.

Install from scratch

To install the Lumicast Player on a Philips Signage display from scratch, follow these steps.

Select the right source

Press SOURCES on your remote, then select Custom.

Enable downloading from unknown sources

To download an unknown app onto your display, you must allow doing so.

Press HOME and then 1888

You will see a menu. This is the admin menu. Go to Settings > Security and enable Unknown sources.

Download and install the app

Go back to the menu on the display and click on Apps.

  1. First go to the downloads page on Lumicast and find the latest version of the Android player. This is for example 1.1.1-direct.apk.
  1. Then on your Android device, open a webbrowser app and go to https://cdn.lumicast.media/android/apk/<version .apk>. This will start a download of the APK file.
    1. ℹ️

The best browser is most often Chromium. You can connect a USB keyboard and mouse to the display for easier input.

  1. Once the APK is downloaded, click to open it. It will ask you if you want to install the app. Proceed with the installation, then open the app.

Enable auto start

Press the OK/enter button on your remote, then click on ‘Launch on boot’ to enable it. It may ask you to give the permission to draw over other apps — this is needed for auto start to work.

Set Lumicast as your default signage app

Press HOME and then 1888

Go to Settings > Signage Display > Source Settings and select Custom app. Here you can select the Lumicast Player app. Also enable Force restart custom app.
